Make mine a triple grande two-pump mocha. No whip.

21 05 2004

I’ve been evil and remiss about posting in my LJ. If there’s anyone out there who hangs on my every sagacious word, my sincerest apologies to you. (Um, Jesse, I guess that’s probably just you. So, “Sorry, Jesse.”)

Well. It looks like I’m going to have to take a trip to Seattle. I know. You all feel sorry for me, and well you should. Seattle in June is unbearable. Long, sunny days. Playful breezes that dance around your ankles and tease you mercilessly as you walk along the sidewalks in Fremont. Quirky shops run by friendly tattooed, pierced, spikey-haired salespeople. Young women jogging up Queen Anne pushing their rosy-cheeked babies in stream-lined strollers.

But this is research, people. My agent wants me to write a novel. I’ve never written a novel, but she read my nonfiction book and plastered it with praises. She loves my writing. Did I mention it’s really fun to have an agent who LOVES (and she does use caps when she says it) your writing? Says she “can’t wait for a novel.” But not just any novel. She wants me to write the one I pitched to her. And the hard, cold truth is: the story is based in Seattle.

It’s a well-known fact that, if “place” is key to your story, then the author must thoroughly know the place. So I guess I’m gonna have to go do what my characters will be doing. Sipping frappucinos on the deck of Starbucks overlooking Green Lake. Dining in the little, out-of-the-way favorite spots of those in the know. (Of course “those in the know” will be taking me there.) Studying the colorful parade of humanity on Capital Hill. Taking lots of pictures. Taking lots of notes. Yeah. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

That’s the deal. I’m excited about this new writing adventure. I spent the past year and four months crying at my computer. It was very healing and very necessary. I’m glad I did it. I know I had to. Now that book is finished and I pray it will fly into the hands of everyone who needs its message of comfort and hope.

I’m ready for a jaunt into imagination land! I’m ready to sit at my computer and laugh for a while. Ideas are buzzing around in my head like a swarm of over-caffeinated Seattle bees. I’m ready to capture them and watch them dance.

So, I leave you with this novel dedication haiku.

Imagination
Soars into Seattle skies
On pen-and-ink wings.

Here

Please make sure your visit to Seattle is before June 11, for if it is after, I’ll miss you and cry my eyes out… or maybe you’ll just have to write another novel on Long Beach and have to take a trip there. Either way, you should visit me and Long Beach. You won’t regret it.

Re: Here

Please don’t cry your eyes out, but I won’t be coming until around the 21st. However, you have my permission to come back to Seattle that week and help me do my research. It would mean lots of “hard work” checking out the cool places in the area. ;o)

I would love to see Long Beach and the cranberry bogs. Some day. (What do you think of a cranberry farm mystery novel?)

Thanks for your confidence in me, Crystal. :o) I’m still in the very early stages of this and don’t know exactly what I’m going to do. But it will be fun!

I meant it as a compliment, Jesse . . . a compliment to me from you. Ha ha. Actually, I don’t know what I meant. I just write these things as they come.

Cool, Jeanne! What’s the novel gonna be about? Or do you know yet? Did you say your agent was on the Master’s Artist?

Thanks, Chris. :o) I’m working on the plot now. The characters are revealing new things about themselves all the time. Very fascinating. I just started writing it all down yesterday, so I have a loooonnnnggggg way to go. But I like the way it’s shaping up! I’ll let you read some (NOT first draft) after I get going, if you want.

Deidre is not on the Master’s Artist. She doesn’t know about it as far as I know. It’s still so new and going through growing pains a bit as we figure out what we’re doing. There is a community now, if you’re interested. There’s a paragraph at the top of the blog inviting people to join it. It will be discussions on faith and art (specifically writing), with new topics introduced each week. We haven’t even introduced the first topic yet, if you want to jump in while the water is still fresh. ;o)

Thanks for your friendship and support, Chris.

Love, J.

Correction

The invite to the Master’s Artist community is not in the opening paragraph of the blog. It’s in the sidebar, right under a purple box that says yahoo groups.
