A Little Bird Told Me

17 02 2005

A Carolina chickadee just lunched at the feeder outside my window. No doubt preoccupied with important chickadee affairs, he tarried only long enough to elicit admiration for his jaunty black cap and debonair, grey dinner jacket. Then, with a twinkling ebony eye, he cocked his head as if to tip his hat and flitted off, probably to attend an exclusive avian gala in the penthouse branches of a classy magnolia somewhere in the historic district.

“Consider the birds of the air . . .”

Today I’m thankful. Thankful that we don’t always get what we ask for.

Remembering

There was a time when I was homeschooled and during the winter months we always put whole wheat toast out on a table to feed them. My sister and I would lay our heads on the table and just watch those little birds flitting around like it wasn’t below freezing and snowing. They seemed to be having such a good time. We had chickadees, blue jays and a few other species that stick around for the winter. Thanks for describing them so aptly.
