Shady toast

14 08 2005

As I’ve mentioned before, movie viewing is an interactive sport for Jacob. If the characters in a court scene all rise, he rises. If someone asks a question, he answers it. If they pray, he closes his eyes and bows his head.

This evening Jacob was watching the Civil War flick, Gods and Generals. I happened to pass through the den during a scene in which neatly dressed-and-pressed Confederate soldiers and a bevy of hoop-skirted belles had gathered at a Christmas party. One of the gentlemen offered a toast. “Let’s raise our glasses . . . ” he paused as all the men complied, “to our Southern ladies.”

In my peripheral vision I saw Jacob pull something out of his pocket and stand to his feet with the men. When I turned to look at him, I lost it.

Hand still held high, he shot me a lopsided grin and questioning glance.

It took a while, but through my laughter I managed to say, “No, Jacob. He wasn’t talking about sunglasses!”

Dr. Clockwork

I can totally picture the “lopsided grin and questioning glance.” It’s an unmistakable Jacob expression. Please tell him “hi” for me.

You & Me Sister

P.S. Have to tell you a funny story. This past weekend, Karla’s Mom and sister Peggy were in town for her graduation from Texas State (M.Ed.), and we were in Gruene (old historic town by New Braunfels) in a little quilt/knick-knack store. Karla picked up a book, turned to Peggy, and said, “You and Me Sister!” and grinned. I looked down at the book, and what do you know!? “Jeanne Damoff” I remembered the cover from your website. Anyhow, I showed them and explained how cool I was that I know such an important person. šŸ˜‰

Yay! I love that! So . . . did you buy it? šŸ˜‰

You are indeed cool, Dr. C. You even lived in this important person’s attic room for a whole summer and feasted on her chocolate chip cookies in vast abundance. Such coolness fades not with the passage of time, but abides in ever shifting shades of awesomeness. Selah.

Thanks so much for telling me about the book! ♥

She certainly is! I am living vicariously through her and keeping notes!

I think that when Andy and I get married, we want to backpack through Europe for our honeymoon, so it’s nice to find out where we should go and maybe where we should avoid!

Re: P.S.

Certainly living in your attic made me cooler. How many people ever get to do that… live in the attic of one of their professor’s family. That attic is a sacred place, as you well know. And I feel blessed to have had it shared with me. And the cookies and steamed broccoli and rolls and cheese chicken croissant thingies as well. And the broccoli cheese soup! You sure did feed me well.

Anyhow, isn’t it odd that I ended up moving to Seattle and living in a professor’s family basement? It was a very cool arrangement as well. Oh the irony. But no cookies, etc. Although the coffee options were much better. šŸ˜‰
