I still haven’t found what I’m looking for

20 10 2005

I was sitting in the den reading a book when the phone rang a few minutes ago. The caller ID said Out of Area. The number had a 703 area code.

I couldn’t place it. Probably just a telemarketer, I thought. I waited and let the machine pick up.

Loud, distorted music blared from the tiny device. What was this? At first I thought it was some sort of prank. It sounded so muddled–like listening through a wall to a garage band with their speakers turned all the way up. And I could hear voices, too. Talking and laughing. I shrugged and was about to walk away, but then I decided to see if I could recognize the song. I leaned in close and concentrated on the words.

And that’s when I heard it. There was no doubt. The tune, the lyrics, and this afternoon’s e-mail all came together, and I burst into laughter–just as the time limit on the message ran out, and the machine disconnected.

I called the number on my Caller ID. When he answered his cell phone, the same live-concert cacophony drowned out his voice. I barely made out these shouted words: “I just wanted you to hear it.”

He said more, but I couldn’t understand him.

I laughed. “I can’t hear you! I’ll talk to you later.”

“OKAY! GOOD-BYE,” he shouted, and we both hung up.

Tonight he’s at a U2 concert in DC. Tomorrow night he’s having cocktails with Bill Clinton at a friend’s house. Or so his e-mail said.

My friends live fascinating lives, don’t they?

Who, me? I think I’ll make some decaf and go finish my book.

Speaking of Decaf…

Last night, I had the most fun getting to know your offspring over Seattle coffee and then Cold Stone ice cream. We laughed a lot! I totally enjoyed their easy conversations. I see why Grace seems to “get” Zach and all his banter. (Luke is Zach on steroids when it comes to ranting about something):) At the end of the evening, we sat on Zach’s porch and listened to songs they each wrote. Zach has guitar lights strung aroung the perimeter of the porch for mood lighting and our sectional couch are cut in halfs on each small side. It was cozy. But what a treat to hear such sweet voices sing random songs and such a variety– both serious and funny. I thought “Train” by Grace was the most unforgetable. They all could play the guitar and sing–showing real talent. I know it is hard to have your kids far away sometimes…but you have “done good” by them! They felt like family. I found them genuine and I especially appreciated the twinkle in their eyes. It was one of those nights I am going to remember as one of my “hallmark mommy memories”.

Aw, Yay! I’m so glad you hung out with my kiddies. I only wish I could’ve been there, too. It’s funny that “Trains” is making the rounds. She wrote that bit of randomness when she was 8 or 9.

What are guitar lights? I’m picturing a string of Christmas-type lights shaped like guitars. Is that right?

Thanks for embracing Grace and Luke with such warmth and joy. I’m sure they felt the same way about you. And thanks for sharing your lovely impressions with me. Your words blessed me.

Love,
Jeanne

Re: Speaking of Decaf…

Yes the lights are just as you thought – strings of Christmas lights shaped like guitars. He also has speakers hidden in behind the couches and frequently plays multiple styles of music through his laptop. The schrubs & trees surround the front walk, which makes for a pretty inviting little front porch. I guess it tickles me a bit ..this living on his own thing…which is why I ramble on. I wish I could have his life and be his age for a week. That would be a kick.

I hope to meet you folks sometime too. I know we would enjoy that.

Warm regards,

Michal

famous people and decaf

This reminds me of the night I went to a Billy Joel Concert and called my husband on our cell phone so he could hear Billy sing.
The most exciting event I had this weekend was last night when my 25 year old son hired a Limo for us and took us to a revolving restuarant in Perth.
I only had one child but when it’s perfect, once is enough *grin*
